Custom Insurance Application Design & Development
Pacific Marine Underwriting (PMU) works with brokers to create insurance policies for marine vehicles, which is very similar to how insuring a car works. Clients work with brokers who collect the necessary information, help clients choose the correct policies for their needs, get approval on the policies, collect payment, create the various documentation and papers for the clients and finish registering and insuring the watercraft.
For this project I designed and managed the development of the entire broker portal and insurance generation application used by Pacific Marine Underwriters. This is the application every broker who works with PMU uses for the entire process of submitting and creating insurance policies immediately.
Some of the key concepts of features of this application
- Web based broker portal where brokers can see all of their clients and start applications for new clients
- Instant approval application system for smaller pre-approved policy types, covering watercraft and clients meeting certain requirements
- Larger advanced application process for more complex custom insurance which may need underwriters to audit and review before finalizing a quote
- Documentation system, to automatically create the official final written papers and legal documents for any binding contracted policy
- Integration with the insurance brokerage system (Applied EPIC), to create clients, create policy documentation, retrieve existing or expired policies for brokers and more
- Financial system, to help initial collection of insurance payment information, especially for standardized quick policies
- Various reporting systems
- Advanced user friendly quick policy quote systems, applicable for the broker to share with customers to help them rapidly understand policies for their watercraft

Services Provided
- PIPEDA Support: PMU is collecting sensitive information for insurance and financial purposes, such as knowledge of past financial claims, cost of insurance and other information that falls under the needs of privacy protection laws. Supporting in processes, security and related topics was part of my responsibilities. example: these projects have unique workflows for restricting access, network security, processes and more.
- BA/SA: All standard business analyst-related skills were utilized throughout the years with this client. Helping design the applications from the ground up, integrations, gather requirements, wireframe development of all interfaces, UI/UX design, and more were done across the entire project base. Every interface in the system was designed by me.
- QA/Testing & Related: With high traffic & large transactional volumes, as well as instant insurance underwriting, any changes, updates, security patches, enhancements, deployments and related need to be done and tested carefully to ensure site stability and perfect functionality. As this is the only system used by any PMU broker across the entire country, even a short site downtime could result in significant challenges for brokers to create policies and cause a loss of sales volumes. As such all topics related to QA were of high importance for these projects.
- PM: All standard PM-based responsibilities, such as billing, reports, meetings, task assignments, scheduling, QA/Testing, budgeting, quoting and all related services. As a large highly complex set of projects, this client required every standard PM-related support service over the years I worked with them.
- Dev PM: All standard development PM related responsibilities, such as scheduling development, working with the programmers, handling sprints, communicating requirements and more were handled by me throughout the entire project cycles.
