Project Overview
I worked with BackCheck in the early 2000’s, at the start of their major growth period, but ending quite a while before their rebranding and/or acquisition. The logo on this page is from the time I worked with them.
I designed and managed development of their custom built ERP system that managed every portion of their production business at the time. They grew fairly rapidly and I believe they used the application described below for at least 10 years, but did within a few years hire internal dev staff to take over maintenance and growth of the systems.
The system developed and designed for them primarily covered their core services at that time which were:
- Criminal Record Checks
- Enhanced Police Information Check
- Financial Checks
- Education Verifications
- Credential Verification
- Drivers Abstracts
- Reference Checks
The system developed had quite a few unique integrations and setups that were very uncommon at that time.
As an example, the Enhanced Police Information Check can only be done by official police officers, so a type of ‘kiosk’ application was developed for the police which were hired to do work directly in the police offices.
As another example, drivers abstracts required integration with the secured systems used to query and lookup the information from governmental records, and special workflows were created to allow staff to be able to store the signed documentation from clients and verify them before accessing this sensitive information.
The system also had high level of security requirements, since it would contain information about criminal record checks, financial information drivers information and more. As such there were quite a few security processes put into place to protect the system.
Services Provided
- PIPEDA Support: BackCheck collects sensitive information including criminal record checks, financial verifications, drivers abstracts and many other elements that fall strongly under the needs of privacy protection laws. Supporting in processes, security and related topics was part of my responsibilities. example: these projects have unique workflows for restricting access, network security, general business processes and more.
- BA/SA: All standard business analyst-related skills were utilized throughout the few years I worked with this client. Helping design the applications from the ground up, integrations, gather requirements, wireframe development of all interfaces, UI/UX design, and more were done across the entire project base. Every interface in the system was designed by me.
- QA/Testing & Related: Being the only system that controls the entire business process, even short downtime can result in bringing the business to a halt, as staff would be unable to access the various documentation, perform checks, accept or move clients forward or anything else. As such any changes, updates, security patches, enhancements, deployments and related need to be done and tested carefully to ensure site stability and that perfect functionality remained. Even short downtime would result in large organizational impacts. As such all topics related to QA were of high importance for these projects.
- PM: All standard PM-based responsibilities, such as billing, reports, meetings, task assignments, scheduling, QA/Testing, budgeting, quoting and all related services. As a large highly complex set of projects, this client required every standard PM-related support service over the couple years I worked with them.
- Dev PM: All standard development PM related responsibilities, such as scheduling development, working with the programmers, handling sprints, communicating requirements and more were handled by me throughout the entire project cycles.
